«The whole of Kashi is a cremation graund» he said …
In Varanasi, the cremation grounds of prominence today are Manikarnika Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat.
The city is more than a place of mortal cremations. It is said to be the final resting place of the corpse of the entire universe at the end of its vast cycle of life.
However, the cremation ground is the most inauspicious of places because of the ritual pollution imparted to it by the bodies of the dead. When members of the funeral return to their homes from the cremation ground they must undergo rites of purification. Yet in Varanasi, the cremation ground and the Manikarnika Ghat is considered as the most auspicious of places.
